Biography
John William Ballantyne was born in Eskbank in 1861 and studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1883. He served as a resident in the gynaecological wards of the Royal Infirmary and in the Royal Maternity Hospital under Professor A R Simpson. He was appointed physician to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in 1890 and chief physician in 1904. He published many textbooks and papers including 'The diseases and deformities of the foetus', 1892-1895, Edinburgh, and 'Antenatal Pathology and Hygiene', 1902-1904, Edinburgh.
