Biography

John Ritchie Richmond was born in 1869. He was educated at Glasgow High School and then studied at Glasgow University, with the intention of pursuing a literary career, but he left without graduating to join the engineering firm of his step-father, G [and] J Weir. Richmond edited and prefaced a volume 'Poetical works of Thomas Chatterton', Lond., 1885 when he was only 16.

His interest in art also developed at an early age and his collection included works by Monet, Pissarro, Degas, D Y Cameron and Russel Flint . Richmond was Honarary President of Glasgow School of Art and a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland.

He died in 1963.
