Letters of Jane Welsh Carlyle to various correspondents., 1826-1856, undated.
Scope and Contents
The contents include a letter to Thomas Carlyle, probably of 1826, replying to his suggestion that they break their engagement (folio 186), and a letter to Dr John Carlyle confirming her intention to marry Thomas, despite gossip (folio 184). In a letter, possibly of 1848, she speaks of her admiration for Garibaldi and Mazzini, and for the Hungarian revolution (folio 188). Appended to a series of four letters concerning family matters to her cousin Eliza Donaldson, is a letter to Miss Donaldson from Lizzie D O James speculating on the authorship of ‘Adam Bede’ and discussing other literary works (folio 212).
