Manuscript, fifteenth century, of the earlier Wycliffite translation of the Epistles of St Paul., 1409.

 Item
Identifier: MS.6127

Scope and Contents

The Epistle to the Romans begins on the bottom half of folio 1. The top half of the folio contained the end of Acts, now erased, over which has been written in a cursive, sixteenth-century hand, 'All thepisties of Paule apostle followen writen 1409 into English'; in the margin the date 1209 is added, presumably a misreading of the indistinct date in the inscription.

The latter part of the Prologue to the Epistle to the Romans is missing, as in British Library Egerton MS.618, Bodieian MS. Douce 369, Trinity College, Dublin, MS.A.1.10, and Adv.MS.18.6.7; in these manuscripts the missing portion is misplaced in the Prologue to St Luke's Gospel. See Forshall and Madden's edition of the Wycliffite versions of the Bible, volume i, page lix.

In some places words have been erased and replaced by readings from the later Wycliffite version, notably on folio 84 verso, where eleven lines have been replaced.

Initials in blue, with pen-work decoration, running titles, and rubrics indicating the Proper Epistles, in red.
