Book of hours, according to the Use of Rouen., Late 15th century.

 Item
Identifier: MS.6131

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Calendar in French in red and black. Entries in red include Saints Nicholas (9 May and 6 December) and Martial (3 July). (Folio 1.)

(ii) Sequences of the Gospels. (Folio 10.)

(iii) Passion according to St John. (Folio 13 verso.)

(iv) Hours of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The whole of Sext, Nones, and Vespers, and much of the other offices is missing. It is probable that Lauds was followed by Matins and Lauds of the Hours of the Cross, but only the first and last folios of these (folios 34 verso, 26) have been preserved. (Folio 20.)

(v) Penitential Psalms and Litany. (Folio 38.)

(vi) Office of the Dead. (Folio 52.)

(vii) Suffrages, including 'Obsecro te' and 'O intemerata'. (Folio 71 verso.)

(viii) Prayers for various occasions. Incomplete. (Folio 94 verso.)

The manuscript has decorated initials and partial borders of flowers, fruit and scrolls throughout. The Sequences of the Gospels are preceded by historiated initials, depicting the four Evangelists. The remaining half-page miniatures are in full borders: the Betrayal (folio 13 verso); the Annunciation (folio 20); the Nativity (folio 26 verso); the Crucifixion (folio 34 verso); David in prayer (folio 38); Burial of the Dead (folio 52); Job (folio 54 verso); the Trinity (folio 71 verso). The miniatures of the Evangelists, the Nativity, and the Burial of the Dead are closely related to those in MS.6129.
