Manuscript of major poems of Claudian., 13th century.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.18.5.13(ii), folios 48-106

Scope and Contents

There remain `De bello Gildonico` 464-526 (folio 48), `In Eutropium` i and ii preface and 1-337 (folio 49), `Epithalamium de nuptiis Honorii Augusti` 78-341 (folio 64), `Panegyricus de tertio consulatu Honorii Augusti` (folio 68), ‘Panegyricus de quarto consulatu Honorii Augusti` (folio 72), `Panegyricus dictus Manlio Theodoro Consuli` (folio 82 verso), `De consulate Stilichonis`, i, ii.1-90 and 154-476, iii preface, 1-85, and 149-369 (folio 88), `Panegyricus de sexto consulatu Honorii Augusti` preface (folio 106 verso). The manuscript was originally complete but has lost probably three gatherings at the beginn¬ing (containing `In Rufinum` i and ii, `De bello Gildonico` 1-463), one gathering after folio 63 (containing `In Eutropium` ii.338-602, `Fescennina de nuptiis Honorii Augusti`, `Epithalamium de nuptiis Honorii Augusti` preface and 1-77), one folio after folio 95 (containing `De consulatu Stilichonis` ii.91-153), one folio after folio 104 (containing `De consulatu Stili¬chonis`` iii.86-148), and two or more gatherings at the end (containing `Panegyricus de sexto consulatu Honorii Augusti` 1-660, `De bello Pollentino siue Gothico`). Folio 104 is wrongly placed: it should stand after folio 101. The order of the poems is Birt’s I (‘Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Auctores Antiquissimi’, x, page cxxix). The text is of Birt`s w class (‘Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Auctores Antiquissimi’, x, pages xcvii-ciii,cxxii-cxxv).

The poems have foliate initials in blue and red; some other initials are in green.

Custodial History

Leicester Abbey possessed a Claudian (catalogue number 597 in William Charite’s catalogue of the library), but its ‘dictio probatoria’ does not correspond to this manuscript, in its present state at least. (See the catalogue record for Adv.MS.18.5.13(i) on Leicester Abbey’s former ownership of that manuscript.)

Bibliography

The poems are edited by T Birt in ‘Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Auctores Antiquissimi’, x (Berlin, 1892).
