The arrangement of the signatures, with the noblemen at the top and the barons and burgesses down each side, implies that it was signed in parliament; the names themselves suggest the Parliament of 1639 rather than that of 1640.

Custodial History

The manuscript was presented to the Advocates’ Library in 1699 by William Aytoun, of Aytoun, Advocate. (The date of presentation is given in an oval at the top as 1703, but the Library Records indicate that it came in 1699.)

Existence and Location of Copies

A copy of a facsimile, published in Edinburgh in 1848, is kept with the document.
