This series contains the foundational documents of Gryphon Books Limited, including the Memorandum and Articles of Association; annual accounts and directors' reports for the company (1948-1976); correspondence, draft accounts and balance sheets for the preparation of these annual accounts; authors' contracts; authors' royalty accounts; a production expenses book; and a permissions file for Gryphon Books fiction titles.

Biographical / Historical

Gryphon Books Limited was incorporated on 28 May 1948 as a wholly-owned subsidiary company of John Murray Limited. This imprint was formed to take advantage of post-war paper rationing on publishers. Notable authors under the Gryphon imprint included Francis Bonnamy, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Bryn Jordan, Osbert Lancaster, and Percival Christopher (P.C.) Wren. No new titles were published after 1953.
