Scope and Contents
Sermons and an address in Gaelic, all in the hand of Rev. Dr Alexander Irvine. The date on sermons is often preceded by "Lagy" or Ly", which probably stands for Lagan-Allochy, the Gaelic-speaking parish that was joined to Irvine's parish of Little Dunkeld.
Listed in John Mackechnie, Catalogue of Gaelic manuscripts, volume 1, page 338, nos 19-25.
The items are:
Address in Gaelic, undated, headed "Earail bheag do Ghael Alba chum an leas, le fior charaid." The text begins, 'A bhraithre ionmhuin[n] 's a luchd ducha mo ghaoil, ged tha me tamull uaibh, 's taitnach leam deagh sgeul a chluintin[n] oirbh.' Small home-made quarto booklet, stitched and paginated [1]-27 by the scribe, the final bifolium detached, and with an extra leaf inserted with additions to page 8. Mackechnie no. 19.
Sheet headed "Lagy [?Lagan-Allochy] 24 March", and "28 1811" added in different ink. Gaelic text from Proverbs, begins "Gnath fhocal 1.23-27 Pillibh rem achmhasan, feuch doirtidh me mach mo spiorad dhuibh". Biblical text only, without sermon. 2 folios, paper dated 1794. Mackechnie no. 20.
Sermon on 1 Epistle of John 3:15, "Gach neach a dfhuathaicheas a bhrathair is mortair e". Dated "Ly [?Lagan-Allochy]" 27 July 1820. 2 folios, quarto. Mackechnie no. 21.
Sermon on John 5:25, "Gu deimhin deimhin a deirim ribh". Dated "Ly [?Lagan-Allochy]" 3 December 1820. 6 leaves, quarto, 9 pages written on, paginated by the scribe. Mackechnie no. 22.
Sermon on Mark 1:15, "Agus ag radh cho lionadh an aimsir", dated L.D. [Little Dunkeld] 28 June 1821. 1 folio, quarto. Mackechnie no. 23.
Sermon on 1 Epistle of John 1:9, "Ma dh aidicheas sinn ar peacanna". Dated Ly [?Lagan-Allochy] 15 July 1821. 2 folios, qarto. Mackechnie no. 24.
Sermon on Philippians 1:21, "Oir dhomhsa bhi beo, se sin Criosd agus bas fhaghail s buannachd dhom sa." Dated Ly [?Lagan-Allochy] 16 November 1823. 2 folios paginated 1-4 by the scribe. Mackechnie no. 25. According to Mackechnie, nos 26 and 27 also belong to this sermon. They consist of two folios each. No. 26 is paginated 5-8 by the scribe, and no. 27 is paginated 5-[6].
