Commonplace-book of Sir John Wedderburn, physician (1599-1679)., 2nd half of 17th century.
Scope and Contents
Sir John Wedderburn was a doctor of note and served both Charles I and Charles II as a royal physician. This volume contains miscellaneous material of the late seventeenth century some of which is of much interest. There are copies of poems, chiefly by John Donne (folio 3-90 verso, passim); on these, see "A new manuscript of Donne's poems" by Alan MacColl. Important medical material is unfortunately small in quantity. Sir John Wedderburn bought Gosford in 1659 for his favourite nephew, Sir Peter Wedderburn, Lord Gosford, Senator of the College of Justice. After 1662 when Sir John returned to Scotland he lived at Gosford and the letters in this volume (suh as that at folio 74) show how his medical advice was sought even in semi-retirement. Apart from such letters the volume also contains detailed case histories of illnesses, written in Latin, as in folio 66.
