Scope and Contents

The volume contains transcripts of documents from various sources, including:

the cartulary of St Mary`s Abbey, Newbattle (Adv.MS.34.4.13), in a different arrangement (folio 15);

charters of Holyroodhouse, apparently from an unknown source (folio 152); these transcripts were used in ‘Liber Cartarum Sancte Crucis’, those at folios 154 verso-162 verso being printed (in a different order) at pages xvi-xli (passim) of the preface. Some (folios 158-159) are also printed in ‘Analecta Scotica’, i, pages 9-10;

excerpts from the register of St Giles`s Church, Edinburgh, of which the original is deposited at the Scottish Record Office (folio 163);

inventories of silverware and other possessions in 1559 of St Machar`s Cathedral, Old Aberdeen (folio 264 verso) and St Nicholas`s Parish Church, Aberdeen (folio 266 verso); these are recopied in Adv.MS.34.1.8, page 187; both inventories are printed in ‘A large new Catalogue of the Bishops of ... Scotland’, pages 74-77, and in ‘Registrum Episcopatus Aberdonensis’, volume i, pages lxxxviii-xci, from Hay`s later transcript; the latter also in ‘Extracts from the Council Register of the Burgh of Aberdeen 1398-1570’, page 320;

A leaf is cut out between folios 162 and 163. Remains of offsets from two fragments probably of vellum used as reinforcing strips in a former binding are visible in the inner margin of folios 1 and 280 verso.
