Scope and Contents

There is no title page, but Macfarlane’s signature appears on the inside front cover. The charters are numbered throughout, and the source of each is indicated accurately. The numbering, dates, and some notes on seals are by Macfarlane him¬self; the text is by his earlier copyist.

Existence and Location of Originals

The majority of the sources are monastic chartularies then in the Advocates` Library; other sources are the collections of Balfour (Adv.MS.15.1.18) and Haddington (Adv.MS.34.2.1), and charters then in the possession of Ker of Graden, Alexander Brodie of Brodie, Robert Menzies of Weem, George Napier of Kilmahew, the Earl of Rosebery, and the burgh of Ayr; an exact list is inserted at the beginning of the volume.
