Custodial History

The manuscript of ‘Thoughts on Education’ (folio 24) belonged in 1761 to Sir Alexander Dick of Prestonfield. The discharge for stipend at Saltoun, 1665 (folio 23) belonged in 1761 to Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton. The letter warning Burnet of an attempt on his life, 1688 (folio 39) belonged in 1734 to Sir Thomas Burnet.

Bibliography

The ‘Thoughts on Education’ (folio 24) were first printed at London, 1761, and again by John Clarke in ‘Bishop Gilbert Burnet as Educationist’ (Aberdeen, 1914).
Folios 34-38 were published by John Jay Hughes, as “The missing ‘last words’ of Gilbert Burnet in July 1687”, in the ‘Historical Journal’, xx (1977), pages 221-227.
The letter warning Burnet of an attempt on his life, 1688 (folio 39) was printed in the first edition of ‘History of his own Time’, edited by Thomas Burnet, volume 2 (London, 1734), page 693.
