(i) Letters of Alfred Kempe to John Murray II and John Murray III.

The letters are arranged chronologically. The letters for 1820 concern the preparation and publication of Kempe’s translation, “A circumstantial narrative of the campaign in Saxony, in the year 1813” (1820), from the German of Baron Von Odeleben. The other letters concern Kempe’s editing, and subsequent printing, of a “curious collection of letters and other MS documents of the 16th and 17th Centuries preserved at Loseley House [i.e. Park] in Surrey” (folio 9 recto).

(ii) Letters of John Kempe to John Murray III.

The letters concern various proposals by John Kempe for potential publications on subjects concerning the Church. Included are letters concerning the preparation and publication of “The classic preachers of the English Church. Lectures delivered at St. James’s Church in 1878. Second series” (1878).

They also relate to Kempe`s request, on behalf of “The Club of Nobody’s Friends”, of which he was Secretary, that John Murray III arrange to print the first volume of the historical list of the Club’s members. The volume, compiled by George Cokayne, was printed for private circulation as “The Club of Nobody’s Friends. Biographical list of the members since its foundation 21 June 1800 to 30 September 1885” (1920).
