Scope and Contents

The letters [Note 1] are to John Murray II, John Murray III and John Murray IV. They concern general business matters and interests, including requests for books, shipping lists, sales, change of ownership, etc.

The letters are arranged chronologically.

1814, 1819-1822, 1826-1827: folios 1-38;

1830-1831, 1833: folios 39-44 [Notes 2-3];

1846, 1854, 1887, 1892-1893, 1896, 1900, 1907: folios 45-58.

Notes.

[Note 1.] Most of the letters are signed “Oliver and Boyd”. Of those that are signed specifically:

folios 20-25 are signed by George Boyd; folios 32-37, 41-44 are signed by George Thornton.

[Note 2.] Folios 39-40. Letter, 2 April 1830, of Oliver and Boyd to John Murray II. Annexed to the letter is a copy of a letter, 1 April 1830, of Charles Macintosh to Oliver and Boyd concerning the “Quarterly Review”.

[Note 3.] Folios 43-44. Letter, 5 January 1833, of George Thornton to “Mr [Edward] Dundas”.
