Letters of Elizabeth Palgrave, the wife of Francis (1788-1861), to John Murray II and John Murray III.

The letters indicate the relationship that existed between the Palgraves and the Murrays. They concern, among other matters, Elizabeth Palgrave`s comments on various manuscripts that she had been invited to read and to consider.

Letters of Francis Palgrave (1788-1861), formerly Cohen, to John Murray II.

Shortly before his marriage to Elizabeth Palgrave, on 13 October 1823, Palgrave changed his surname from Cohen to that of the family name of Elizabeth’s mother. Therefore, letters written prior to the change are signed either “Francis Cohen” or under the initials “F.C.”

The letters concern various literary matters, including enquiries about and comments on Lord Byron, his character and his poetry. Other comments concern the “Quarterly review”, and articles by Cohen for that periodical.

The letters concern, in part, the “Quarterly Review” and William Gifford, his editorship and infirmity.
