Scope and Contents

The letters appear to be to John Murray II and John Murray III. Also included are some letters of Palgrave to John Gibson Lockhart [Note]. The letters relate to various publishing concerns, including articles for the “Quarterly Review” by Palgrave, and Palgrave’s editorship of “The hand-book for travellers in Northern Italy” (1842 and subsequent editions). Two letters, folios 100-101 and 105-106, are in the hand of an amanuensis.

The letters are arranged chronologically.

1830-1832, 1834-1836, 1838-1839: folios 1-32;

1841-1844: folios 33-65;

1845-1848: folios 66-84;

1850-1852, 1854-1860: folios 85-125.

Undated and partially dated letters.

(i) Letters, [? 1830-? 1852 (WM)], which probably concern the “Quarterly Review”. Folios 126-132.

(ii) Two letters, ? 1845 and undated, which probably concern the “Handbook for travellers in Northern Italy”. Folios 133-136.

(iii) Letters, undated, concerning Palgrave’s interest in, and publications on, English and European mediaeval history. Folios 137-145.

(iv) Other. Folios 146-151.
