Scope and Contents
Author Washington Irving (1783-1859) had many of his most famous works published in Britain by John Murray, including 'Sketch book of Geoffrey Canon', which includes the stories of 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'.
The holdings here reflect the business and personal relationship between Irving and the house of Murray. There are over 60 letters of Irving to John Murray [II] and John Murray [III]. In addition, the sequence includes letters of George Putnam, the American publisher of works by Irving.
There are also manuscripts and some proofs relating to the works of Irving. Included are manuscripts relating to 'A Chronicle of the conquest of Granada', 'The Quarterly Review', 'The Crayon miscellany', and an autobiographical outline of his life. In addition, there are legal and financial documents relating to the works and copyrights of Irving, as well as some miscellaneous papers.
