As literary advisor and editor of the 'Quarterly Review', William Gifford was a frequent correspondent of John Murray [II]. The correspondence in this subseries are letters sent as literary adviser and friend - those that mainly relate to his role of editor of the 'Quarterly Review' can be located in Ms.42252.

Within the letters in this subseries, Gifford writes about manuscripts that have been sent to him for review and discusses mutual acquaintances, including Lord Byron, Washington Irving, Walter Scott and Robert Southey among others.
