Letters of John Cam Hobhouse to John Murray II and to John Murray III., 1814-1865.
Scope and Contents
Hobhouse wrote letters to John Murray [II] and John Murray [III] for over half a century. The letters cover many topics, but largely relate to his own publications or the works of and about Lord Byron. While Byron was still alive, Hobhouse often wrote to Murray with news of the poet and his works. As executor for Byron, Hobhouse was heavily involved with his posthumous reputation, including organising monuments and ensuring the accuracy of publications about the poet. Many of the later letters also focus on his own publications, particularly regarding his works about his travels that were published by Murray in the 1850s and the 1860s.
