Scope and Contents

This manuscript recounts a visit Hobhouse made to Switzerland in 1816. It details meetings with Lord Byron and Madame de Stael, as well as other people and places Hobhouse encountered during his journey.

This work by Hobhouse was published by John Murray in 1859 as the first chapter of 'Italy : remarks made in several visits from the year 1816 to 1854'.

The language of the manuscript is English, but where a remark was made in French, Hobhouse has recorded it faithfully.

The manuscript is undated, but the watermarks of the paper on which it is written are of 1831 and 1854. Original foliation has been retained.
