Manuscript of critical observations by John Cam Hobhouse on 'Life of Lord Byron' by John Galt; in particular, on the use by Galt of recollections of Byron by Marie Henri Beyle., , ? 1830-1837.

 Item
Identifier: MS.42297

Scope and Contents

This manuscript details errors and misconceptions that John Cam Hobhouse has found in 'Life of Lord Byron' by John Galt. The criticisms here are largely focused on the use of the inclusion of the memories of Marie Henri Beyle (also known as Stendhal). Hobhouse refutes the claims with his own version of events.

Folio 1 of the manuscript differs in layout from the remainder of the manuscript and the last line of folio 1 does not correspond exactly with the first line of folio 2. The subject, however, is closely related.

The work by Galt was first published in 1830 and a note on the verso of the last folio, added some time after the criticisms on the earlier folios, gives a date of 1837.
