Manuscript of a rebuttal letter of John Cam Hobhouse regarding certain statements made by John Galt., 1830-1861
Scope and Contents
Draft of a manuscript in the form of a rebuttal letter of John Cam Hobhouse probably to the editor of the ‘Monthly Review’ in which he details errors and clarifies elements of his disagreement with John Galt.
Galt had a letter published in the October edition of the ‘Monthly Review’. A response by Hobhouse was published in the November edition, which strongly relates to some of the points made in this version, although considerably revised and condensed. The issues ultimately centre around claims that Galt made in his 'Life of Lord Byron'.
A note on the verso of the final folio is dated 1861, but it is likely that the majority of this manuscript was written nearer the time of the publication of 'Life of Byron' by John Galt in 1830.
