The papers include a petition of Christian Strachan, accused of parricide, for appointment of counsel, with signature of James Erskine, Lord Grange, 1712 (folio 4); warrants for committing to, continuing in, or liberating from, the Tolbooth, 1662-1673 (folio 5), 1736 (folio 10), 1794 (folio 13); the imprisonment of seven soldiers of the City Guard for firing on the mob at the execution of Andrew Wilson, 1736 (folio 10); names of eleven persons who escaped from the Tolbooth as a result of the Porteous Mob (folio 10); Act of the Town Council, regulating the fees payable to the jailor and clerk of the Tolbooth, 1728 (folio 15); declaration signed by Sir William Purves, H M Solicitor, 1665 (folio 7); warrant for the bringing of ‘Mr Alexr Pedene, a rebel in the tolbooth’ of Ayr and Hew Ferguson, ‘also prissoner ther’ to the Tolbooth of Edinburgh, 1673 (folio 8).
