Scope and Contents

At the beginning is a poem in French on the doctrines of the Church. The work is dedicated 'Germano compari nostro Joanni Manach', and bears the date 1759 at various points. Although Antoine Maillard's name appears as that of the author, it is not certain that this manuscript is in his hand.

‘Le Catéchisme Micmac’ by Father Pacifique (Restigouche, 1906), is based on an original manuscript of Antoine Simon (Petrus) Maillard's catechism of 1759 in Quebec. For an account of Maillard, see ‘An account of the customs and manners of the Micmakis and Maricheets, savage nations now dependent on the government of Cape-Breton’ (London, 1758).
