 Item
Identifier: MS.1902

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Gregory the Great, Homiliae xl in Evangelia ('Patrologia Latina' lxxvi, 1075-1312), preceded by a list of the Homilies, of which the beginning is missing. After folio 45, which is torn, leaves are missing, containing from the middle of Homily xviii to the middle of xxxiv; a hole is burnt through folios 24-29. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Origen, Homilia i, in Matthaeum, i, 18-25 ('Patrologia Latina', xcv, 1162-1167). (Folio 84 verso.)

(iii) Bede, Homiliae, I, vi, vii, iii, xxiii; only the earlier portion of the first three homilies is given ('Patrologia Latina', xciv, 34-36, 38-41, 22-23, 120-125). On folios 89-90 verso is a homily on John i, 1-2, apparently not by Bede, beginning 'Oportet nos, fratres karissimi', and ending 'Illud verbum, quod erat in principio apud Deum, hoc factum est'. (Folio 88.)

(iv) Ambrosius Autpertus, De Conflictu Vitiorum atque Virtutum, to the end of cap. xxvi; here attributed to St Augustine ('Patrologia Latina', xl, 1091-1105). (Folio 95 verso.)

(v) Hugh of St Victor, Expositio in regulam Sancti Augustini ('Patrologia Latina', clxxvi, 882-924), beginning 'Ante omnia, fratres karissimi, diligatur Deus . . . Hic precepta que subscripts sunt'. After folio 117 a leaf is missing, containing the latter part of cap. viii. For the anonymous fifth-century Rule here attributed to St Augustine, see E Dekkers and A Gaar, 'Clavis Patrum Latinorum' (Steenbrugge, 1951), number 1839. (Folio 104.)

Except folios 118-121 verso, the manuscript is written in double columns. Some names of speakers in section (iv) are added in English in a fourteenth-century hand, and references to scripture in the margins of section (v) in a hand probably of the fifteenth century. At the beginning and end are scraps of writing in sixteenth-century hands.
