Scope and Contents

The earlier letters include those of Major-General John Brown, Regional Support Command, as a planter in Tobago, and on service in Ireland, 1797. Those of General Sir George Brown relate to the affairs of the 43rd, 85th, and Rifle Brigade, Army matters in general, official and political gossip, and private and Morayshire concerns. Beginning with the Napoleonic War, they describe or refer to the Radical disturbances, 1819-1820, service in Malta, 1822, 1826-1827, 1852-1853, the Reform movement, 1831-1834, service in the Ionian Islands, 1832-1836, 1840, 1859 (including a tournament held at Corfu, 1834), the railways, 1840-1841, the Rebecca Riots, 1844, the Xhosa War and South African affairs, 1846-1853, the Crimean War, the popular agitation which ensued, and the errors of Kinglake, 1854-1857, 1863-1864, and the chief command in Ireland, 1860-1865 (including the Prince of Wales's service at the Curragh and the Royal visit, 1861). There is much correspondence about Indian affairs, 1842-1858, and the letters of Colonel Orlando Felix describe his travels, partly with Lord Prudhoe, in Egypt, Greece, and Turkey, 1826-1829.
