Scope and Contents
The correspondence is preceded by a copy, 1876 (watermark), of the Minutes of Kirkcaldy Town Council, 1815-1816, relating to the appointment of Thomas Carlyle as schoolmaster there, and a printed notice, 1816, of Smith and Johnstone's school at Ecclefechan. Mrs Carlyle's letters, 1821-1826 and undated, include several written to Carlyle before their marriage. The writers include: Henry Duncan, Minister of Ruthwell, 1827 (on German theology); Allan Cunningham, 1832, 1837, 1839; Harriet Martineau, 1840-?1841; John Gibson Lockhart, 1841; Mazzini, 1844 (describing proceedings in the House of Commons relating to the opening of Italian letters), 1848, undated; and Bulwer (afterwards Lord Lytton); Erskine of Linlathen; Leigh Hunt; and Jeffrey, undated.
