Scope and Contents

The contents include:

Printed matter relating to the '15 (folio 5): Declaration of Prince James Edward, 26 January 1716; plan of the capture of Preston; ‘Act for Appointing Commissioners to Enquire of the Estates of certain Traytors’ (Edinburgh, 1716);

Letters of Sir Alexander Macdonald of Sleat and his wife, referring among other things to the kidnapping of Skye men for shipping to America, for which Sir Alexander was blamed, 1739, 1741 (folio 21).

The majority of the papers relating to the '45 deal with the surrender of Edinburgh to Prince Charles Edward, and appear to belong to a file made up for the trial of Provost Archibald Stewart (passim). See various printed editions of the report of the trial. There are also letters of Sir James Grant of Grant, offering to raise a regiment for the Government, 1745-1746 (folios 57, 81), and of his son Ludovick on operations in the north-east in early 1746 (folio 87); a letter of Lord President Forbes to the commanders of all HM ships on the north-west coast, assuring them that they can safely apply for information to Macdonald of Sleat or Macleod of Macleod, 1745 (folio 59); an inquiry into the surrender of Fort Augustus in 1746 (folios 85, 96-104); minutes of courts-martial held in the British Army (folios 94, 111, 129); Cumberland's order of march on Inverness, 1746 (folios 91-93); lists of rebels, suspects, and prisoners, 1746-1747 (passim); letters of Lovat, circa 1728, 1743 (folios 17, 30), Cope, from Amulree, 1745 (folio 32), and Cumberland, this last saying that he hopes to capture ‘the disturber… be he ever so hid’, 1746 (folio 105); lists of toasts of the Independent Club, Westminster (Jacobite), 1746 (folio 142); petitions of Sir Alexander MacDonald, afterwards Baron Macdonald, 1774 (folio 156), and Major William Nairne, afterwards Lord Nairne (printed), undated (folio 166).
