Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: (i) General correspondence on ecclesiastical matters, 1768-1863. Included are three letters, 1835, of and to the Reverend Thomas Chalmers D.D. Other writers are George Long, classical scholar and editor of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge Biographical Dictionary; and Henry Burgess, the theologian. (Folio 1.) (ii) Letters of and to John Inglis Chalmers, 5th of Auldbar (died 1868), on episcopal church affairs, 1860-1866. (Folio 45.) (iii) Correspondence and papers concerning the vacant first charge in Brechin parish, 1857, and the dispute over the appointment of a new minister (folio 82). The papers include petitions addressed to Lord John Russell (folios 105, 119, 221, 238), and a letter from Russell (folio 237). (Folio 82.)
