Scope and Contents

The original extent of the collection can be seen from the list at folio 1; several items are no longer present, and the bulk of the letters and documents, which were abstracted from various parts of the Saltoun Papers, have been restored to their original positions. Some of those which remain may also have come from this source; some are from other Scottish archives; one at least passed through the saleroom (letter of Horace Walpole, folio 154: Sotheby's, 25 April 1843, lot 186).

Included are letters of James Beattie, Thomas Campbell, Carlyle, Cockburn, Lord Hailes, Disraeli, Adam Ferguson, Jeffrey, Marshall Keith, Monck, Peel, Dugald Stewart, Scott, Wellington, and Horace Walpole; documents of Ebenezer Erskine, David Hume, Earls of Marchmont, and Viscount Strathallan; manuscripts of De Quincey, Galt, J S Blackie, Canning, and Sir Thomas Dick Lauder; and a vellum leaf from a noted and rubricated service-book, perhaps French, fifteenth century.
