Scope and Contents

The sketches include scenes, portraits, objects, and incidents. Some are the source of woodcuts in John Hanning Speke’s ‘Journal of the discovery of the source of the Nile’ 1863, and some of these have notes in Speke’s hand.

Arrangement

The majority of the sketches were mounted by James Augustus Grant in 1880 in two albums and provided with printed introduction, lists and captions, the latter mostly repeating contemporary inscriptions; an earlier arrangement in indicated by pencil numbering.
