Lesmahagow missal, probably written for use in the Tironensian priory of Lesmahagow, first half of the 13th century., 1st half of 13th century.

Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: (i) Four noted leaves from the Ordinary of the Mass, late 13th century, containing the Glorias, the Creed (without music), and the Prefaces 'Eterne Deus' and 'Vere dignum'. (Folios A- D.) (ii) Temporale; the 24th Sunday after Trinity is omitted. (Folio 1.) (iii) New Testament readings and Missa pro pace (folio 99). The creed has been added in another hand (folio 100). (iv) Preface and canon of the Mass. The word 'papa' has been erased from the opening of the canon, and supplications for the abbot, brothers, sisters and benefactors deleted. (Folio 101.) (v) Votive masses, including 'Pro seipso' and 'Pro defunctis abbatibus' (folio 108). In most cases only the collect, secret and postcommunion is given. They are followed by 'De sancto Kentegerno', 'De sancto macuto', 'Demetri et Pelagie', 'De reliquiis' and 'De sancto Thoma [Becket]' (folio 115). There are several additions in other hands, including prayers for women (folio 114). (vi) Sanctorale ending with Saints Katherine, Vitalis and Agricola, and Saturninus. It includes the translations of Saints Cuthbert and Benedict, and the feasts of Saints Guthlac, Dunstan, Alban, Oswald and Machutus. (Folio 115 verso.) (vii) Common of saints (folio 157 verso), including St Kentigern (folio 161 verso) (viii) 'In purificatione sancte marie benedictio ignis' and part of 'Benedictio cereorum'. (Folio 166).

Sections (ii) and (v)-(vii) are chiefly written in one hand; changes of hand occur on folios 99, 100, 101, 105 verso, 108, 162 and 166. Sections (ii), (v), (vi) and (vii) have red and blue penwork initials; similar initials in (iv) are unfinished. Section (i) has plain blue and red initials. There are three large initials containing spiralling foliage in gold and colours (folio 101) and a smaller gold initial with decorative infilling (folio 1).

A commination and confession (folio 100 verso) and the beginning of the missa salus populi and readings from the missa pro serenitate aeris (folio 107 verso) are written in cursive hands on blank pages; a prayer has been added in a book hand (folio 101); and there are other additions throughout, including sketches of a grotesque (folio 71) and of foliage (folios 66, 87 verso). There is a note “Pro anima Adae et Sibillae uxoris eius Henr' de Riponia Philippo” (folio 101).

Collation: 1¹, 2⁴, 3-9⁸, 10⁸ (+ 1 after 4), 11-14⁸, 15⁴ (+ a bifolium after 1; + 2 single leaves after 3), 16-22⁸, 23⁴ (- 4; + 2 single leaves after 2). Quire-mark on folio 8 verso. Remains of a catchword parallel to the text on folio 89 verso. Two columns. 39-40 lines (section (iv) 20 lines; folios 162-166, 343-346 lines). Page-markers are cut in folios 112 and 157.

Custodial History

For evidence of later ownership by Lord Petre, see MS.16495A and notes, 1946-1947, by Sir Sydney Cockerell (folio i). Cockerell bought the manuscript in 1945.
