The contents are as follows: (i) Two letters, 1868, to Thomas Carlyle concerning Thomas Erskine of Linlathen, one with a note by Thomas on the back, and eight letters, 1869-1871, undated, of Dr John Brown to J A Carlyle (folio 1); (ii) The end-paper of a book with Thomas Carlyle's signature, dated 1865, and bookplate (folio 29); (iii) Letters and accounts, 1859-1868, concerning the farm of Craigenputtoch, and receipts, 1878-1880, for taxes and other expenses for it (folio 30); (iv) Financial letters and papers, 1833-1870, undated, including a note, 1833, of a debt by Alexander to Thomas Carlyle; a receipt, 1833, by J A to Thomas Carlyle; two letters, 1851, of Thomas Carlyle to his banker at Dumfries; letters, 1865-1867, of J A Carlyle and the banker to Thomas concerning investments; and notes, 1867-1870, of Thomas Carlyle's investments, (folio 77); (v) Accounts and receipts, 1855-1880, to Thomas Carlyle from the British Linen Company's bank at Dumfries (folio 121); (vi) Legal accounts, 1867 and 1878-1880, concerning Craigenputtoch (folio 143); (vii) Cheques issued by Thomas Carlyle on the British Linen Company's bank, 1842-1843, 1850, and on the London Joint Stock Bank, 1859, 1868-1878 (folio 154).
