Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) 'Of the sound of language', 1790. (Folio 1.) Monboddo number 244. (ii) 'Of the ancient verse compared with the modern, and of the accents and quantity of the ancient languages', 1766. (Folio 18.) Monboddo number 154. (iii) 'Of rhythme'. (Folio 44.) Several articles and parts of articles, 1766, undated. The last of these (folio 124) ends with several pages on the teaching of accent and verse in English schools. Monboddo made several changes in the arrangement of these items; at one stage the sequence was folios 57, 80, 99, 81. Includes Monboddo numbers 237-240, 235.
