Scope and Contents

There is no title page, but apart from that the manuscript has the appearance of being intended for publication. After prefatory material the text is in two books. The first, described at its end (folio 205 verso) as τῆς λογικῆς πραγματεία is in five sections: περὶ ἁπλῆς ἐννοίας (folios 7; 4 chapters), περὶ ἀμφισβητήσεως (folio 61; 3 chapters), περὶ τῆς κατὰ διάνοιαν κρίσεως (folio 83; 4 chapters; πρῶτον in the heading as an error for τρίτον), περὶ διανοίας ἢ περὶ συλλογισμοῦ (folio 119 verso; 7 chapters), and περὶ μεθόδου (folio 186 verso; 4 chapters). After three blank folios (207-209) and a section περὶ ἀρχῆς καὶ προόδου φιλοσοφίας (folio 210 verso), the second book begins, also without title; it is in two parts: εἰσαγωγὴ εἰς ἅπασαν tὴν φιλοσοφίαν ἤτοι τὰ κατὰ γένος τῆ φιλοσοφία προσανήκοντα (folio 217; definitions, followed [folio 223] by ἔρις εἰσαγωγικὴ εἰς τὴν φιλοσοφίαν ἐν γένει ἤτοι τὰ κατὰ γένος περὶ tὴν φιλοσοφίαν ζητούμενα, in 3 dialectical enquiries) and ἔρις εἰς τὴν λογικὴν εἰσαγωγικὴ ἤτοι τὰ καθόλου περὶ τὴν λογικὴν ζητούμενα (folio 233 verso; 5 enquires); followed by τὰ περὶ τὰ πραγματευόμενα ὑπὸ τῆς λογικῆς ζητούμενα (folio 260 verso; 6 enquiries). Diagrams are given in the first book, sometimes in the text, sometimes on inserted leaves. On folio 290 are written, apparently in the same hand, five τροπάρια ascribed to Kυριακὸς ὁ Kαστελλοριζιώτης. Bibliography: Authorities are quoted in footnotes (arabic numerals being used); Aristotle is the most frequently cited, but other ancient (Greek and Latin), medieval (Western and Byzantine) and modern writers also appear. The most recent of the latter – G B Bilfinger, ‘De harmonia animi et corporis humani’ (Frankfurt, 1723); Theodosius [Korydaleus], ‘εἰς ἅπασαν τὴν λογικὴν τοῦ Ἀριστοτέλους ὑπομνήματα καὶ ζητήματα’ (Venice, 1729); C F von Wolff ‘Cosmologia generalis’ (Frankfurt, 1731), and ‘Psychologia empirica’ (Frankfurt, 1732) – provide a terminus post quem for the work.
