Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows. (i) Correspondence, with some enclosures, 1830-1846, of Victoria Mary Louisa, Duchess of Kent and mother of Queen Victoria, with the 1st Baron and Baroness. The correspondence is concerned mostly with the Lady Flora Hastings affair; the resignation of Sir John Conroy, Comptroller of the Duchess's Household; the marriage of Queen Victoria; and the Duchess's relations with her daughter. (ii) Excerpts in the hand of Ralph, 2nd Baron, from letters of the Duchess to Lord Dunfermline, March-July 1839, from originals returned to her after the latter's death and later destroyed; with a few press cuttings on the death of Lady Flora Hastings (folio 109); (iii) A continuation of the above series of excerpts, August-December 1839 (folio 142); (iv) Further excerpts of letters to Lady and Lord Dunfermline, 1840-1841 (folio 191).
