The estate papers for the Roxburghshire, Fife, and Angus possessions of the Elliots of Minto provide a very full account of the history of these lands from the middle of the eighteenth century until the First World War. In particular the correspondence of the successive heads of the family with their factors and Edinburgh lawyers covers every aspect of estate management.

The papers relating to Minto contain little material from before 1696, the year in which Sir Gilbert Elliot, 1st Baronet, bought Headshaw, though the financial papers of the Scotts of Chapel start in 1678, and the earliest inventory of estate writs dates from 1668. But from the 1760s the history of the estate is much clearer, and the papers include, besides the correspondence already mentioned, detailed labour journals, correspondence relating to gardening, forestry, and gamekeeping, and a good run of estate accounts.

The Melgund papers are less full than those for Fife, and there is little material from before 1726, the year in which Sir Alexander Murray, 2nd Baronet of Melgund, came of age. The papers for the Lochgelly estate, the western half of the old barony of Kinninmonth, which until 1791 also included Urquhart in the parish of Dunfermline, are more extensive. The correspondence begins circa 1572-1573, and the accounts, memoranda, and tacks in the seventeenth century. Of particular importance are the records of coalmining both at Urquhart and at Lochgelly, which include detailed accounts and labour journals. The estate papers are particularly full for the years 1742-1746, the minority of Agnes Murry Kynynmound.
