Scope and Contents

202 folios. The contents are as follows:

A few notes of accounts, 1494-1499, between the Burgh of Haddington and their fermorars. Folio iii-iv.

Decisions of the Court of Session (practicks), December 1550 – October 1577, collected chronologically by Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington. Numbered up to 254 and continued to about 200 more. Folio 1 recto-110 verso.

Folios 111-119 are blank.

Extracts from the Books of Sederunt of the Court of Session, 1532-1568, imperfect at the beginning. Folio 120 recto-126 recto.

Folios 126 verso-137 verso are blank.

'Heir followis ane breif and compendious tabill or cathalog of the names of the kingis of Scotland France and Ingland ... Collectit gatherit and set furth be Sir Richart Maitland of Lethingtoun knight the yeir of God M vc and thrie scoir yeires [1560] the xiiij day of the monthe of October." Contains lists of the kings of Scotland with the dates of their reigns (folio 138 recto-142 verso and folios 150 recto-154 recto), the kings of France (folio 143 recto-144 verso and folio 160 recto-163 recto) and England (folio 145 recto-149 verso and, beginning again with William the Conqueror, folio 156 recto-158 verso). With a number of blank pages in between. Folio 138 recto-163 recto.

The king of France’s title to the Dukedom of Milan, headed "Ane shorte declaratioun of the king of Francis title and rycht q[uhi]lk he hes to the dukric of Myllan". Folio 164 recto-165 recto.

Folios 165 verso-167 verso are blank.

Genealogies of the houses of York and Lancaster. Folio 168 recto-verso.

Folios 169 recto-184 verso are blank.

“The historie and cronicle of the hous and surename of Seytoun to the moneth of November. In the yeir of God [1559] yeiris collectit gaderit and set furth be Schir Richart Maitland of Lethingtoun knycht, dochteris soun of the said hous“. Probably the original or the earliest copy extant of this history which has been printed repeatedly, e.g. Bannatyne Club, 1829. Folio 185 recto-199 verso.

Custodial History

With the bookplate of "The Honble Allexander Grantt, younger of that Ilk" on the front paste-down. Below this, an inscription records: "Castlegrant March 30 1740. This book is gifted to Lord Elches by Lud. Grant." Ludovick Grant was the son of Sir James Grant of that Ilk (1679-1747), brother of Alexander Grant.
