Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows. (i) copies, made on paper watermarked 1839, of letters 1795-1799, 1803 of Cuthbert (later 1st Baron) Collingwood, with some other related correspondence and papers (folio 1). Printed from the originals in Edward Hughes, editor, ‘The private correspondence of Admiral Lord Collingwood’, ‘Navy Records Society Publications’, volume xcviii, 1957. Other copies of the letters, made about 1840, are in MS.1811. (ii) Letters written between 1773 and 1805 with some undated, of and to Frances Douglas, Baroness Douglas of Douglas, nee Lady Frances Scott (folio 48). Some of the drafts of Alexander Carlyle's replies are written on the backs of old letters from others. (iii) Letters written between 1787-1801, undated, of Henry Dundas, later 1st Viscount Melville (folio 103); (iv) Letters 1758-1760, undated, of Samuel Garbett (folio 128). (v) Letters, written between 1767 and 1803, of Sir William Pulteney, 5th Baronet of Westerhall, formerly Johnstone (folio 146). (vi) Letters and excerpts, 1747-1749, 1754 of Tobias Smollett (folio 172). Printed by Henry W Meikle in the ‘Times Literary Supplement’, 24 and 31 July 1943 from copies in the papers of Principal John Lee. (MS.3464, folio 120-140). Excerpts had been printed in Edward S Noyes, ‘The letters of Tobias Smollet, M.D.’ (Cambridge, 1926): the complete letters were reprinted in Francesco Cordaro, ‘Letters of Tobias George Smollet a supplement to the Noyes Collection’ (Madrid, 1950). (vii) Letters, 1758-1765, undated, of the Honourable Charles Townshend (folio 184).
