Scope and Contents

A notebook compiled by John Tolmie, headed "II Songs" on the cover; 49 ff. Contains anecdotes, newspaper cuttings, sayings in Gaelic (f. 37) and songs in Scots, English and Gaelic. Undated except for a news cutting on f. 3, which is dated April 1905.

Folios 17v-19v contain two songs by his brother Alexander McDonald Cornfute Tolmie: "Burial of Reuben a dog at Contin Manse, by A.M.C. Tolmie, 1884", and "A non-historical celebrity (Bella). Contin. - by A.M.C.T."

Folios 21v-22v contain a song headed "The hat of John Tolmie by the author of Stronbuy [i.e. James Cameron Lees]", dated 1858.

Folios 6v-11r contain notes of medical recipes taken from "John Matheson's book, Drummond, 1808".

The Gaelic material is as follows: folios 12r-13r: Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, "Oran do Phrionnsa Tearlach" (also found in Acc.14025/5, pp. 1-5); folios 24v-26r: Iain mac Dhùghaill mhic Lachlainn (MacDonald), "Tha tighinn fodham eiridh", stated to have been copied from Uist Bards"; folios 31v-32r: Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, "He 'n clo-dubh"; folios 32v-33r: "Nighean donn a' chuailein riomhaich", beg. 'S ann a fuireach thall 'sna cluaintean / Tha 'n nigh' bhain a rinn mo bhuaireadh'. 6 x 4, with 4-line refrain beg. 'Nighean donn a' chuailein riomhaich'; folio 33r: Mackenzie, William, Inverness, "An Gaidheal 's a leannan", beg. 'Chionn 's gu 'm bheil gach gleann 'na fhàsach'. 7 x 2, with 3-line refrain beg. 'Theid is gu 'n teid i leam'; folio 37r: Gaelic sayings or tongue-twisters.
