The notes relate to plot and character revisions and additional plot development for the third draft. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.

Research notes, circa 1996, of Ian Rankin on the historical figure of Bible John; with developmental notes of Rankin on the sections of ‘Black and Blue’ directly relating to Bible John. Folios 16-76.

The notes relate to plot development of the Bible John sections of the novel, as well as Rankin’s development of his Bible John character. The notes include Rankin’s research from news articles and books relating to Bible John.

Most of the notes are undated and, as far as possible, the arrangement has been suggested by the development of the plot, themes, or connection with other drafts and revisions.

Included are photographs (folios 75-76) of an unidentified police station, used by Rankin as research.
