Developmental notes of Ian Rankin for his novel ‘Let It Bleed’., 1994-1995.

 File
Identifier: MS.50361

Scope and Contents

Notes, 1994-1995, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘Let It Bleed’. Folios 1-85.

Most of the notes are undated. The notes include first notes towards the novel as well as references to specific drafts, including first and second drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.

Includes research on police structure in Scotland, forensic science, and the City of Edinburgh Council.

Data Protection: names, addresses, phone numbers

Editorial notes, 1994-1995, of Ian Rankin relating to revised drafts of ‘Let It Bleed’. Folios 86-123.

The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for the second, third, and final drafts. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.

Also included are editorial notes of Caroline Oakley (Folios 117-121) and Penelope Isaac (copy editor – see MS.0049) (Folios 122-123).
