Developmental notes of Ian Rankin for his novel ‘The Complaints’., 2009.

 File
Identifier: MS.50406

Scope and Contents

Notes, 2009, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘The Complaints’. Folios 1-44.

The notes include working notes and research, including research on the Complaints and Conduct Department (Police Scotland), surveillance, banking crisis, and ketamine. Most of the notes are undated. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including the first, second, third, and final drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.

Editorial notes, 2006, of Ian Rankin relating to revised drafts of ‘The Complaints’. Folios 45-97.

The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for revised drafts. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.

Also included are editorial notes of Caroline Oakley (editor, Orion Publishing Group) (Folios 88-93).
