Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Alexander Paterson qualified as a doctor at Edinburgh in 1885. He spent a few years in London, Cairo and Aden, before entering on his main work as a medical missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland at Hebron in Palestine in 1893. He remained there until the station was handed over to the Church Missionary Society in 1922, when he retired to Edinburgh. He died in 1940. His only published work is the posthumous 'Jesus meets Paul, a duologue in Paradise', Glasgow, [1942]. There is a biography of William Ewing, London, [1931].

The most interesting part of the present collection is probably the diaries, which give details of the life of a respected missionary at a significant time in the history of the Palestine area, and are important both from the political and missionary angles. The theological and liturgical material is also of interest. The paucity of surviving correspondence is regrettable.
