Scope and Contents

London solicitor John Hanson (1755-1841) was a friend, agent and adviser to Lord Byron. He acted as a guardian to a young Byron and continued to be a key figure in the life of the poet. Their close relationship is reflected in the correspondence here between them. Also included here are letters of Byron to other members of the Hanson family, and from John Hanson to various members of the circle of Lord Byron, including Catherine Gordon Byron, John Cam Hobhouse and Augusta Leigh. There are also letters of Charles and Newton Hanson, the sons of John.
