Scope and Contents

The death of Lord Byron in Greece at the age of 36 came as a shock to his many friends and admirers. The letters in this series include those relating to the death of the poet; letters of the doctors that had attended him; letters concerning his funeral and memorial; letters relating to his estate and will; and letters and other material relating to the notorious burning of the memoirs of Byron in the drawing room fireplace of John Murray. The writers and recipients include some of those closest to the poet, including John Cam Hobhouse, Douglas Kinnaird, Augusta Leigh and John Murray [II]. Material related to the destruction of the memoirs of Lord Byron is contained within a bound volume and includes printed copies of letters and press cuttings related to the event.
