Scope and Contents

This series contains many official, legal and financial documents that relate to Lord Byron and his family. Contained within the series are genealogies and papers relating to the ancestors of Lord Byron; papers concerning births, marriages and deaths within the Byron family; legal documents such as wills and leases; records relating to the estates of Newstead Abbey and Southwell; passports and travel documents; accounts, statements and bills; and official documents relating to Lord Byron and his time in Greece.

In addition there are sale catalogues of items owned by Lord Byron that were sold at auctions; and the catalogue of the papers relating to Lord Byron that were in the possession on Charlotte Carleton, Lady Dorchester. Many of the items listed in the latter catalogue were bequeathed to John Murray IV and are part of the John Murray Archive.

The series is arranged by themes, as follows: records relating to the extended family of Lord Byron; papers relating to the marriage and separation of Lord and Lady Byron; medical advice of various doctors to Byron; items concerning Byron and Greece, including papers relating to his death; financial accounts and statements, in chronological order; legal papers relating to Lord Byron; legal records relating to Byron’s ancestors; items relating to the memorialisation of Byron; and, catalogues of the sale of items owned by Lord Byron, with the papers relating to Byron formerly in the possession of Lady Dorchester.
