Letters of Lord Byron to John Murray II concerning Bowles' Strictures on Pope, 1821.
Scope and Contents
There are here two letters of Lord Byron to John Murray II dated 1821, both relating to the work of William Lisle Bowles about Alexander Pope. These letters form part of the controversy between Bowles and Byron about Pope. The two letters have been bound into one volume.
The first of these letters is dated 7 February 1821, with additional notes and insertions added at the end of the letter. It was published by Murray as a pamphlet on 31 March 1821.
Bowles replied to this letter in a conciliatory tone, prompting Byron to suppress the second letter in this volume, dated 25 March 1821, and it was not published in his lifetime.
The letters in this volume have been previously foliated, where each letter has been foliated separately i.e. with a new sequence of foliation beginning with the second letter. Both letters have notes and amendments at the end of their sequences. This original foliation has been retained.
Letter I, including notes and additions: first series folios 1-25;
Letter II, including notes and additions: second series folios 1-22.
