Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows.

(i) Manuscripts of ten poems, two incomplete, first published in "Blackwood's Magazine", 1827-1831. The titles are: 'Ode for music on the death of Lord Byron', 'Ane rychte gude and preytious ballarde', 'Will and Sandy', 'A Greek pastoral', 'A real vision', 'A Sunday pastoral', 'The raid of the Kers', 'Johnne Graimis eckspeditioun till hevin', 'The miser's grave', and 'The magic mirror'. (Folio 1.)

(ii) Manuscript of ‘Songs by the Ettrick Shepherd’. Leaves corresponding to printed pages 93-103, 129-138, 193-196, 224-271, 296-297, and 310-11 are lacking. 'The minstrel boy' appears twice, with two different introductions. (Folio 26.)

(iii) Manuscripts, undated, of three apparently unpublished poems entitled 'New poetic mirror' (two parodies of Leigh Hunt), and 'Extempore song'. (Folio 95.)

(iv) Manuscript of the poem 'Elegy', first published in ‘The Spy’, 25 May 1811, and reprinted in "Blackwood's Magazine", October 1817. (Folio 99 verso.)

(v) Copy of 'To Mary' by Robert Southey. (Folio 100 verso)

(vi) Manuscripts of four 'Songs for the baloon', and 'Verses to the Comet in 1811'. The first two 'Songs' are early drafts of the poems, "The witch o' Fife" and 'The moon', published in ‘Songs by the Ettrick Shepherd’. The other three poems are apparently unpublished. (Folio 101.)
